The Dufrocq School’s MicroSociety

Students at The Dufrocq School have begun implementing an innovative educational opportunity called MicroSociety. This learning environment empowers students to create a “miniature society” inside the school, giving them an opportunity to apply their knowledge to real life experiences. Dufrocq students began learning about how a society works, how government works for the people, and how a community operates. This knowledge helped students understand what is involved in making their school a community and prepared them to write a constitution for the Dufrocq MicroSociety. The students voted to

name their society “Crawfish Bayou”.  Dufrocq micro money, which students will earn and spend, has been named “Crawfish Cash”.

The Dufrocq faculty and staff have participated in a variety of activities that will enable students to understand how to create a successful MicroSociety learning environment.  In preparation for launching this society, several faculty members attended the MicroSociety Annual Conference in Philadelphia as well as visited other MicroSociety Schools in Chula Vista, California and El Paso, Texas.

Consultants from the MicroSociety organization are working with administrators and faculty at The Dufrocq School to ensure the success of this innovative program.  At Dufrocq’s January staff development meeting, MicroSociety consultants set up a “Live Micro” in which faculty and staff experienced government ruled by a Monarchy.  If you
