Direct Services:
Students are taught specific skills according to their IEP.
Related Services:
Students usually have another primary disability and the V.I. specialist will consult with the teacher about how to best teach according to the child's IEP.
The Major Difference:
Most often students receiving direct services are pulled out of class for face to face instruction. Students receiving related services are seen in their class and the specialist talks to the teacher.
What's the Same?
For both services the V.I. specialist may bring special equipment and materials needed for the child's visual impairment.
East Baton Rouge Parish School System provides the "Least Restrictive Environment" for children with visual impairments. Since visual impairments is a low frequency population there are schools considered "clusters" for students with this exceptionality. Robert E. Lee High School was the high school cluster. The schools with specific programs for elementary students with visual impairments is Jefferson Terrace Elementary School.
