The Blind Childrens Center is a non-profit organization available to blind and partially sighted children regardless of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, religion, or ability to pay. Founded in 1938, the Center is a project of the Southern California Delta Gammas. The Blind Childrens Center operates without state or federal assistance.

Braille Institute of America is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate blindness and severe sight loss as a barrier to the fulfillment of life.

LEAP 21: Making the Grade is a joint effort between LPB and the Louisiana State Department of Education to help students prepare for the Math and Language Arts sections of the LEAP test. There are 15 segments each for 4th and 8th grade Math and Language Arts based upon the tutoring guide developed by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Anne Sullivan, a Perkins alumna and the teacher of Helen Keller, was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Leaders and Legends in the Blindness Field.

Special Education Resources on the Internet (SERI)
SERI is a collection of Internet accessible information resources of interest to those involved in fields related to special education.

The New York Institute for Special Education(NYISE) is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian educational facility which provides quality programs for children who are blind or visually disabled, emotionally and learning disabled and preschoolers who are developmentally delayed.

It used to be the case that teachers of visually impaired students only taught them in residential schools. Now we're all over the place and we go by different names. What we do varies according to each student's Individual Education Plan (IEP). Regular education teachers who have a visually impaired child in their regular classroom may want to check this page to see how we collaborate in educating kids with V.I.

Visual impairments resource teachers check out and borrow from a lending library located at the Louisiana School for the Visually Imapired. If your student is on our parish roster for services check this site for items we may be able to borrow from LSVI that come from APH. This includes textbooks in Braille and large print and the accompanying workbooks.

A searchable online library. The Bookshare collection of digital books and textbooks now numbers over 50,000, as well as over 150 newspapers and periodicals

This is the company that makes JAWS, the screen reader we use in this parish. A former student of mine also works for the company and has been very helpful when I've needed help with some of the equipment.

He also goes to the technology show in California every year and tells me when he gets to meet Stevie Wonder. He knows I love Stevie and tries to make me jealous

From elementary school, students with visual impairments should have been registered with the state library.  If not click this link and download an application. Bring it to me to sign off as a vision expert verifying that you will require the services.

For required reading of literature for English classes check with your English teacher as soon as possible. Then contact the state library and order a copy of the book ASAP because sometimes it takes several weeks and people all over the state are using this service.

You can order books during V.I. Resource class and they will be delivered by mail to your home.

Books and magazines in large print, Braille and recorded cassettes as well as descriptive videos are loaned to people of all ages who cannot read because they are visually impaired, legally blind.

The Learning Disabilities Association of
America is a national, non-profit organization whose purpose is to advance the education and general welfare of children and adults of normal or potentially normal intelligence who manifest disabilities of a perceptual, conceptual, or coordinative nature.

Self Advocacy

This is such a cool site put together by a teenager from the UK and her dad. I contacted them a few years ago and I like to see what Bianca's up to. He emailed not long ago to add my new link and logo to Bianca's site. Great for self esteem of kids with this condition.

This site shows how people with certain eye condition see the world.

WRBH 88.3 FM, Radio for the Blind and Print Handicapped, was the first full-time reading service on the FM dial in the United States. WRBH translates the printed word into the spoken word. The station is located at 3606 Magazine Street, New Orleans, Louisiana. For information call (504) 899-1144.

NOTE: I'm not sure about the availability of this service after hurricane Katrina. I have a former student who is organizing the same type of service from the Lafayette area. Log innhere for updates. ~K

Vision Screening

I often return to this site for it's color blindness test. You can test yourself or a student whose vision you suspect include color blindness. I also have a link to this site on my personal web page.

Mr. Michael is color blind on more than one level.

 

There's nothing quite like looking into your child's eyes. But while you're busy gazing at your young one, be sure to pay attention to his or her eyesight. Early detection and treatment of eye problems are essential to a child's visual health.

Visual Conditions

This is one of my favorite sites for young people with albinism because it was created by a young lady when she was a student. It is featured at the main NOAH web site as well. It disspells myths and helps uplift those with the condition.

NOAH stands for the National Organization for Albinism and Hypopigmentation.

This condition accompanies several visual conditions. This overview page will help you to understand why kids with nystagmus take longer to read or get tired of reading sooner than others. 

Since 1908, Prevent Blindness America has been the nation's leading volunteer eye health and safety organization with the sole mission of preventing blindness and preserving sight.

It is possible to have a serious vision problem and not know it.

Vision problems that are left undetected and untreated may lead to vision loss and in some cases blindness. Early detection is the key to minimizing vision loss.
