Beginning Braille
Elementary Braille readers may be separated from sighted peers for reading because in grades PK to 3rd begins the process of learning the over 160 letters, signs and contractions that make up the Braille code. By the end of third grade as most of the code is mastered, then the children can join their sighted peers in a Braille version of the same reading series.
Braille Literacy for the child with multiple disabilities involves involves and even more varied method of instruction. Mrs. Michael has used this method as presented by Dr. Diane Wormsley Program Director of the Professional Preparation Program in Education of Children with Visual and Multiple Disabilities at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia.
Non-reading Students
Mrs. Michael will provide consultation for the teachers of children who have more severe disabilities with visual impairments. She will provide ideas for including these students in activities with sighted peers and provide equipment and materials according to the child’s IEP.
Technology
For readers and non-readers who are partially sighted or blind, Mrs. Michael may cooperate with the child’s teacher in providing/instruction in the use of appropriate technology for the visually impaired.
