Students will not be permitted to enroll in a second semester ART course before completing the first semester course.
ART I
Lab Fee: $20/Year Grades - 9, 10, 11, 12
The course is recommended for beginning art students and students interested in the graphic arts. The course explores the theories of the elements and principles of art and their applications using a variety of art media and techniques.
ART II Lab Fee: $20/Year Grades - 10, 11, 12 This course involves the study of elements and principles of art in a 2-dimensional format. Students will use a variety of media: pencil, charcoal, pastels, ink, watercolor, tempera, and acrylics in the study of various subject matter. PREREQUISITE: Art I
ART III Lab Fee: $20/Year Grades - 10, 11, 12
This course incorporates both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional media in the study of the principles and elements of art. Media that is studied (but not limited to) includes, papier mache, ceramics, relief, additive and subtractive sculpture. PREREQUISITE: Art I
ART IV Lab Fee: $20/Year Grades - 11, 12 Designed for the art student who wishes to pursue the arts and is independently motivated. Students will explore various media to develop thematic concepts. Recommended for art students who need to develop portfolios for scholarships and entrance into an art college. PREREQUISITE: 2 years of art and the recommendation of the teacher.
Art IIIy/IVy (TR) Lab Fee: $20 Grades -11, 12 This course will include instruction in the basics of layout design, and commercial design as it applies to advertising, publication, and web page. Instruction is the basics of media software includes (but is not limited to): Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, FrontPage, and Flash. As part of this course, students will work to design and publish the Senior Yearbook. PREREQUISITE: Art I, Art II/III or Teacher Recommendation.
FINE ARTS SURVEY Grades - 9, 10, 11, 12 This course is directed toward those students who have an interest in the visual and performing arts, but where the focus is on the history, culture, aesthetics and criticism of the work, and less on production. Students will demonstrate a conversant knowledge of terminology and techniques, learn to recognize and analyze examples of visual and performing art in their historical context, distinguish artistic styles and give informed verbal and written critiques. This course also meets the requirement for the Regents' Scholar Certificate of Recognition, the BESE Honors Curriculum, and the “TOPS” Scholarship Program.

Lab Fee: $20 year
Materials: drawing utensils (pencil/pen); 9x12 sketchbook
The goals of the art program are to foster an interest in the visual arts and facilitate ability in artistic skills. Structured projects with a focus on the theories, historical/cultural context and the techniques & methods of art enable students to develop artistic perception and analysis as well as creative expression.
The major objectives are: 1. Artistic Perception: define and identify the elements and principles of art in a variety of media, gain familiarity with techniques, strengthen perceptual awareness and cognitive abilities through sensory experience. 2. Creative Expression: manipulate the elements and principles of art to communicate ideas and feelings visually, apply new techniques to self expression, develop skill in care and use of art supplies and equipment, attain proficiency in speaking or writing about visual works of art. 3. Historic/Cultural Context: recognize, distinguish and appreciate art and culture of differing cultures and historical eras, analyze, compare, interpret and evaluate visual art of self, other students and major artists. 4. Aesthetics: develop and exhibit an individual point of view that expresses the students preferences and an understanding of this concept at the heart of artistic choice making and problem solving.

Grading
Student assigned projects will be accomplished through the following 3 part routine:
- Research: analysis and critique of an artist or style relevant to the project, observational sketches and written commentary.
- Composition Exploration: the arrangement and manipulation of symbols/objects and the elements and principles of art for the best aesthetic statement, expression.
- Lab Activity: use of and interaction with materials, techniques, project completion, self-evaluation critiques.
Graded projects must be completed in the classroom's lab activity. The project completion includes self-evaluation critiques.
Grading is on the 10-point scale: 100-90% = A 89-80% = B 79-70% = C 69-60% = D 59 or lower = F
