Title: AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES                             226100

Description: African American Studies is an elective course designed to explore the in-depth and factual history and culture of a distinct class of Americans.  It will provide a study of Africans in their native land, an introduction into the business of slave trading, the institution of slavery in the New World, the role of free blacks, blacks in the military and during Reconstruction, and their struggle for freedom.  Also, the course will analyze current issues and seek to find solutions that will benefit society as a whole.

Description: This course is designed to educate young people about the law, which is of practical use in everyday life. It addresses general problems in the areas of criminal and juvenile justice; torts, consumer, family, housing and individual rights; and civil liberty laws.  Interactive strategies are used to teach the various concepts presented.  Students are taught to be open-minded about the laws that govern them.  Experts in the area of law will  serve as guest speakers throughout the course.  Students will also gain knowledge of the trial process through mock trial activities done in the classroom setting.

Description:  The study of geography is organized around five themes--location, place, human-environment interactions, movement, and regions.  Location and place help students understand how to make geographic observations.  Human-environment interactions, movement, and regions give students a foundation for geographic analysis.

Description: This course takes the study of world geography to a greater depth. The study of geography is organized around five themes--location, place, human-environment interactions, movement, and regions.  Human-environment interactions, movement, and regions give students a foundation for geographic analysis.  Students will be expected to perform at an accelerated pace.

Description:  FREE ENTERPRISE - The course content surveys the American Free Enterprise system and the basic economic systems of the world. The basic economic concepts including the roles of the consumer, business, labor, and government will be studied in addition to the fundamental characteristics with emphasis on supply and demand.  CIVICS - This course provides an overview of American government from its origin and structure to citizenship and its rights and responsibilities of America’s role in world politics.  Specific topics that will be covered include:  good citizenship, jobs and education for Americans, building better communities, the structure of the federal political system, and the rights guaranteed by the U.S.  Constitution.

Description: CIVICS HONORS - This course takes the topics of Civics to a more advanced level. Description:  World History is designed for college-bound students and for students interested in man's rise to civilization.  The first semester will consider man's early development and the origins of civilization.  Outstanding civilizations of the past will be studied for the contributions each has made in history. The second semester will include a continuation of the study of early civilizations and examine some present-day cultures.
