EBR Leads the Area in the Number of New National Board Certified Teachers - Dec 5, 07
Emily Weathers, an English teacher at Istrouma High, is one of 26 new National Board Certified teachers in EBR.

Twenty-six East Baton Rouge Parish School System teachers have successfully completed the rigorous process for National Board Certification.  The newly certified teachers are recognized as among the nation’s top educators.  National Board Certification is the highest credential in the teaching profession.

For the second straight year, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System leads the area in the number of new teachers who are National Board Certified.  The district tied with one other school district for the most new National Board Certified teachers in the state.  EBR now has 100 teachers who are National Board Certified.

The certification comes with a pay supplement which totals $8,000 dollars.  This includes, $5,000 from the state and the East Baton Rouge Parish School System provides $3,000 for the length of the certification, which is ten years.

About 35 percent of teachers that apply for National Board Certification actually receive the award. Certified teachers must show a complete knowledge of their teaching areas. Additionally, teachers create portfolios which include student work samples, assignments and videotapes of their teaching techniques.
