More than 50 parents from Capitol Middle School were recognized January 23 for outstanding parental involvement at an awards ceremony for the new Parent Honor Roll, an incentive-based program connecting parents and school to increase student attendance and achievement. Eleven parents were recognized for achieving more than 300 points for parental involvement at the school.
Supporters of the program participated in the breakfast event held at the school, including presenters Louisiana Rep. Steve Carter, AT&T Louisiana Regional Director Rick Demint and East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) officials. The program is sponsored by the Academic Distinction Fund (ADF).
In his remarks, Rep. Carter said, "Promoting excellence in our schools is a top priority of mine, and it is important that the local business community provide leadership in advancing public education. It is wonderful to see companies like AT&T supporting our local schools which will make a real difference in the lives of our children.” AT&T presented a check for $7,500 to ADF to create the new parent involvement program.
Eligible parents of Capitol Middle School were awarded gift cards and certificates of appreciation during the event. Those achieving 300 points for parental involvement at the school were also entered into a drawing to receive a per-household award of $600 for rent and utilities. The parents recognized at the event held January 23 were Lashun Dundy, Lekisha Reed, Eddie Curtis, Shadaina Johnson, Justine Gage, Riley Thomas, Nicole Tinson, Tanya Davis, Melissa Veal, Shun Marshall and Colby Smith.
Points were achieved by parents for volunteering, attending workshops and focus groups, joining the Parent Faculty Association, ensuring students have perfect attendance and attending parent-teacher meetings. Following the parent awards presentation, the school honored students who have made the A/B Honor Roll.
The ADF Parent Honor Roll program was launched at Capitol Elementary and Capitol Middle schools early in the 2011-2012 school year. For more information, contact Angela deGravelles at (225) 202-5073.
