A group of attorneys turned a fairytale into a teachable moment May 2 for a group of Audubon Elementary School girls. Members of the school’s Rosebuds Club, a student club for girls, participated in a mock trial of “The State vs. Jack and the Beanstalk” at The Family Court of East Baton Rouge and practiced preparing a legal case, arguing points before a court, following legal procedure and even judging evidence and testimonies to render a decision. The hands-on activity included portions of the school’s Social Studies curriculum taught in an actual courtroom.
Some of the student “lawyers” included (pictured, left to right): Jasmine Tate, Jacqueline Magana, Shailyn Nelson, Joy Gordon and Abigail Marquez. They helped develop their case with volunteers from the Lewis A. Martinet Legal Society Inc. (pictured): attorneys Michael L. Tyler, president, and Natalie Tellis Robertson. Some refreshments were provided by The Baton Rouge Links. Also participating in the mock trial was the club’s co-sponsor, Judge Lisa Woodruff-White. The other co-sponsor is Principal Joni Roberts.
