Gym Filled With Signs, Cheers During Student Presidential Debate

It’s presidential campaign time, and the students at Belfair Montessori Magnet Elementary School want to be a part of the process – even if it’s not official. On Friday, October 24, the school kicked off its Campaign Week with a student-held mock presidential debate. While teams for each candidate debated issues like education, the war and the economy, students in the audience held up signs, waved pompoms and cheered for their favorites (first photo). Students Cleveland Gordon, supporting Sen. Barack Obama, and Kendrick Richardson, supporting Sen. John McCain, got into a friendly debate of their own after the event was over (second photo).
Moderated by fifth-grader April Murray (third photo, center), the debate featured two student teams: (left side, left to right) Tai Manning, Jailen McKnelly and Tavier Briggs for McCain and (right side, left to right) Simon Alarcon, Wilani Porter and Jordan Reed for Obama.
For the rest of this week, students will root for their candidates and then participate in a mock election on Thursday, October 30. The school also celebrates Red Ribbon Week during this time with “We Elect to Be Drug-Free.” A Get Out to Vote and Red Ribbon Rally will be held at 2 pm Friday, October 31.
