On Friday, September 9, students in Broadmoor High School’s Sculpture and Ceramics classes rolled out red clay, pounded out stenciled animals and created a relief mural made of terracotta tiles.  They were led by Santanu Majumdar, an artist and art faculty member at Georgia Southern University, in creating the terracotta piece.  Students like Siu Ho Hua (pictured, left) and Devin Reese (right) paid close attention as Majumdar (center) showed them the correct way to manipulate the clay.  Sculptural Ceramics teacher Laurie Johnson assisted.

All total, about 150 students participated in the event, which was sponsored by the Baton Rouge Bengali Association and funded with an Open Doors Grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts.  After a firing of the tiles, the result will be a long mural in relief format created from the tiles and running around two doorways, the upper part of the school art room and down a column post.  It will be about 20 inches high and 104 inches wide when completed.  Red Hot Center for Clay, a local community based ceramic teaching studio, is assisting with the project.
 
On Saturday, September 10, local artists from the community worked with Majumdar to create take-away artwork made from the red terracotta pottery in the school’s art room.
