BRCVPA Students Create, Perform Original Opera
- November 13, 2008

The fourth-grade students of the Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts are inviting the public to their free performances of an original opera, “A Knight to Remember.” The 30-minute opera was written, composed and produced entirely by the school’s fourth graders. Scenes 1 and 3 take place in the kitchen of a modern day orphanage. Scene 2 is a modern day talent show with a medieval theme.
The performances are made possible with assistance by the Washington National Opera and the New York Metropolitan Opera Guild’s Creating Original Opera program. Creating Original Opera, which originated with the New York Metropolitan Opera, has been in existence for seven years at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. In the program, fourth-grade students are placed in one of 11 crews: publicity, costuming, performers, electricians (lighting design), writers/historians, makeup, set design, carpenters, composers/ orchestra and stage managers. Each crew is under the supervision of a teacher or staff member.
For more information or to schedule student interviews, contact teacher Diane Sneed at (225) 344-0084 or at dsneed@ebrschools.org.
