Older Students Read to Younger Ones on Literacy Day at BRCVPA - September 13, 2011

The International Reading Association and the Capital Area Reading Council held International Literacy Day on Thursday, September 8, and students at the Baton Rouge Center for Visual & Performing Arts (BRCVPA) celebrated with a “readathon.”  The purpose of the event was to focus attention on worldwide literacy needs.

Older students at BRCVPA took younger students under their wings and read to them that day.  For example, third graders Asya Stewart (left) and Taylor White (right) read the book “Bootsie Barker Ballerina” to Pre-K student Meghan McCaskill (center).

According to the Association, more than 780 million of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write, and between 94 and 115 million children worldwide lack access to education.
