The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has recognized teacher Lai Cao of Baton Rouge Magnet High School as a recipient of its 2011 Vernier Technology Award. “They (the awards committee) reviewed many applications, and yours was chosen as it showcased your exemplary science teaching skills,” the letter stated. Cao teaches three levels of Physics, Honors, Advanced Placement and traditional courses at the school. The Vernier Technology Awards, co-founded by the Vernier Software and Technology Company, promote the innovative use of data-collection technology using a computer, s graphing calculator or other handheld device in a science classroom. Seven in all are awarded annually to teachers across the nation: one at the elementary level, two at the middle school level, three at the high school level and one at the college level. “To me, technology is a tool that helps me teach effectively and improve our quality of teaching and learning,” Cao said. “The fact is my students appreciate all technological tools in class. With the equipment that comes with the award, we will be able to do more interesting activities. It is an honor to be one of the winners.” As the Vernier Technology Award recipient, Cao received $1,000 for expenses to attend the NSTA National Conference in San Francisco March 9-12 and complimentary registration. In addition, she received a one-year membership for NSTA and $1,000 in Vernier products. She was recognized at the NSTA Teacher Awards Gala March 11.
