BRMHS Student is USA Mathematical Olympiad winner! - 05/09/2007

Baton Rouge, La- Delong Meng of Baton Rouge Magnet High School was a winner of the 2007 USA Mathematical Olympiad.

On April 24-25, 505 students tackled a challenging six-question exam, distributed via the Internet to their schools. Delong was among the 12 top scorers. More than 225,000 students took part in the series of challenging contests put together by the Mathematical Association of America’s Mathematics Competitions program.

The field was cut to 10,000 students after the American Mathematics Contest 10 and/or the American Mathematics Contest 12. Those remaining took part in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination, after which the field was narrowed to the 505 invited to compete in the USAMO.

Delong has earned a trip to Washington D.C. to take part in a ceremony to be held at the headquarters of the MAA on Sunday, May 20. Another ceremony and reception at the U.S. Department of State will occur on Monday, May 21. Delong will then return to MAA headquarters on Tuesday, May 22 and Wednesday, May 23 to take the team selection test (TST) to try to qualify for the very prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad team.

The team will consist of the six students with the highest combined scores from the TST and the USAMO. If Delong qualifies for the IMO team, he will spend three weeks in June preparing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program where the students will be trained for the International Mathematics Olympiad, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from July 19-30.

Both Delong and Baton Rouge Magnet High School should be very proud of this accomplishment!
