Buchanan Elementary Students Educate Peers on Smoking Dangers - Feb 15, 08
Buchanan Elementary fifth graders are equipped with the information they need to educate their families and their peers about the dangers of smoking. ICare Specialist Susan Thornton, with the assistance of a physician, recently taught the students a lesson on the dangers of smoking. They learned about the diseases, chemicals and statistics related to cigarettes. Once the lesson was complete, the students created posters displaying the facts they learned. They also committed two of the facts to memory for their next task, teaching fellow students about cigarette hazards. “It’s called cross-age teaching,” Thornton said.  “The students learn better hearing from other students.” The idea is that students will reject smoking if they hear about its effects from someone who look and sound like them. A concept is also called peer refusal. Thornton calls the fifth graders ‘experts.’  They enter a fourth grade classroom, toting their posters, and ready to answer any question about cigarettes.  And the fourth graders had many questions, including, “What is the youngest age people start smoking?”, “What are some of the chemicals in a cigarette?”, “How do you get cancer from cigarettes?” “They love being the experts,” Thornton said.
