The quick thinking of East Baton Rouge Parish School System bus driver Mickie Lilly helped to prevent a possible tragedy earlier this month. The veteran school bus driver was running her regular route on February 2nd, taking students to Merrydale Elementary School.
While she was driving down Joor Road, Lilly said she noticed the cars in front of her were slowing down. As she moved closer to the area, Ms. Lilly saw a toddler walking along the busy road. While other cars zoomed by, Mickie Lilly decided she had to help. She told the students on the bus to hold on as she pulled over and stopped. She recalled why she made the decision.
“He’s an infant. I mean anybody with any kind of heart that cares anything about children is gonna stop and pick up this baby.”
Ms. Lilly says when she opened the bus doors and stepped on the side of the road, the little boy walked straight toward her. He remained on the bus with Ms. Lilly and the students until the authorities arrived. The little boy was eventually reunited with his family.
The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will recognize Ms. Lilly’s Good Samaritan effort at its March 15th meeting.
