| Parents Learn About Cochlear Program for Hearing

Sara Causin, a clinical applications specialist with Cochlear America (left in photo), laughs with joy as a hearing-impaired student repeats what was said behind her. The student, who has worn the implant for three years -- one year consistently, was able to hear clearly what Causin said to her in a low voice. They showed off the device at the Hearing Impaired Program of East Baton Rouge Parish School System's recent meeting for parents of children with Cochlear Implants. Part of the meeting regarded the collaborative efforts of the Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation and Cochlear America. The entities are working together to develop a troubleshooting and repair site to keep the implants in good working order.
Children with cochlear implants can function with almost normal hearing in regular classrooms. The equipment must be worn consistently and stay in good working order so students can benefit. Previously, parents had to travel to New Orleans for repairs. Cochlear and the foundation teamed up to provide local support so children and parents do not have to miss school and work in order to maintain the equipment. If an implant malfunctions, the student has no hearing in that ear until repairs are completed, and this jeopardizes academics and instruction. With local support, repairs can be made quickly, and there will be minimal effect on lost instruction time.
