Dilworth Asks for More Business Involvement at VIPS Event - October 14, 2010

East Baton Rouge Parish School System Superintendent John Dilworth kicked off the Partners in Business luncheon in late September by asking local businesses to get more involved in area public schools.  The event was hosted by Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) and will continue as a regular speakers series throughout the year.

Dilworth gave thanks to several prominent partners, such as Louisiana State University, Southern University, ExxonMobil and several churches.  He also asked for more mentorship and volunteerism from additional local businesses and organizations, including those in the faith-based community.

VIPS reports about 1,100 volunteers are helping students read or work on math – up by about 200 from last year.  Plus, 329 group partnerships were established with schools – up by about 82 the previous year.  However, several schools have no partners at all.
