Girls Learn Engineering Is Not Just for Men at ExxonMobil Festival - April 30, 2010

About 200 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girls from across the Greater Baton Rouge area learned about and were encouraged to enter the field of engineering during the ExxonMobil Girls in Engineering Festival held April 29 at the River Center.  Besides exhibitors like the State Police DNA Crime Lab, students visited with more than 50 ExxonMobil engineers and employees who conducted demonstrations and worked with the girls on science and engineering competitions.

The highlight of the day was at noon, when student teams competed in “Marshmallow Mania.”  Team members worked together to build a catapult from wood sticks, tongue depressors and plastic straws.  Staring Education Center students (left to right) Natalie Gilbert, Chynna Barnes, Anassia Carroll, Breashia Blackmore and T'a'Panga Blunt watched in anticipation to see how far they

catapulted their marshmallow.  Students learned about motion, forces and simple machines during the competition.
