Fresh fruit, fun physical activities and a cash prize. It was all part of a special visit made to Forest Heights Academy of Excellence by Del Monte Fresh Produce on December 2. Teacher Kim Comeau was a top winner in North America in the Del Monte Fresh Produce 2nd Annual Teacher Monday: Cash for Classrooms online contest, which is geared toward getting schoolchildren to make healthier eating choices. That prize included a school-wide Del Monte Fresh Field Day for students where they could enjoy fresh bananas, pineapples, melons and grapes and learn about the importance of eating and living in healthy ways. Students made fruit salads and fruit kabobs and played games, like roll the pineapple and Hula hooping (pictured, kindergartener Semaj White in action). To win, Comeau was required to submit an essay on how she planned to incorporate healthy eating messages into classroom lesson plans and then get her friends and family to vote for her online. Comeau won $750 in cash for classroom supplies and $250 worth of fresh fruit vouchers for healthy classroom snacks. Other Forest Heights teachers also won $1,000 for educational programs. They include: Allison Melancon, Leslie Doyle, Nicole Marshall and Kristen Johnson.
