For the second time in recent weeks, a delegation of representatives from France toured Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet School (BR FLAIM). With the assistance of the Louisiana Department of Education, the trip today, February 7, was set up to allow them to observe how the students are taught French and use the language in all areas of education.
Sen. Louis Duvernois, a member of the Senate of France, and Philippe Aldon, an attaché for French Education, toured some of the classes with lead teacher Pauline Ewing. Aldon (pictured sitting, at left) sat in on a fourth-grade French class taught by Christine Merchant and observed students like Milan Williams (center, left in pink) and Delaysia Jarvis (center, right in purple). Part of the reason representatives have been viewing the program at BR FLAIM, and related language programs at other East Baton Rouge Parish School System sites recently, is there has been some discussion of forming English-immersion schools in France.
Duvernois also is a representative of the French living abroad and a member of the Union for a Popular Movement ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_for_a_Popular_Movement ) Party (UMP). He once worked in Canada as a correspondent for the French Press Agency and worked at "Le Soleil" newspaper. He also was a counselor to the Canadian Minister of Communication. Duvernois is the founding member of the "Union des Français de l’Etranger" (French living aboard Union) and is administrator of Radio France International, of the Alliance Française Association and of the two French High Schools of Montreal.
