The Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors (GBRAR), a private trade association of licensed real estate brokers, agents, certified appraisers and others in affiliated businesses, recently announced the winners of their Teachers Award of Excellence Grants.  Four East Baton Rouge Parish School System teachers won grants ($1,000 each) to enhance education with funds for school site personnel to use for instructional, research-based projects providing direct service to students.

Phyllis Cisneros and Crystal Lane, Brownfields Elementary fourth-grade teachers, will use their award to purchase third- through sixth-grade level Marilyn Burns Classroom Math Libraries. Developed by one of our country’s leading math educators, the libraries feature award-winning, classic and contemporary titles that captivate and motivate children while addressing grade-level appropriate mathematics topics.

Jennifer Dobbs, a Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School Title I Pre-K teacher, will use her grant funds to purchase books, manipulatives and supplies for take-home activity bags. Each week the students will be given a different take-home bag containing a letter to the family, a book and a related activity. These activities will provide an opportunity for parents to spend quality time with their children while reinforcing subject matter introduced in the classroom.

Earlisha Whitfield, a Ryan Elementary third-grade teacher, will use her grant award to host a Small Business Expo at her school as a culminating activity for an Economics and Small Business unit of study.  The Expo will showcase student-developed products and marketing strategies, as well as PowerPoint presentations of their business plans.
