David Luo (pictured), an 11-year-old who attends Glasgow Middle School, won an award for the Overall Best Project in the Middle School Region VII Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair held Sunday, March 7, at Louisiana State University (LSU). His project was “How Does a Chemical Reaction Make Electricity?”
Luo was among more than 100 sixth-to-eighth-grade area students competing in the event. As a school winner, he advanced to the regional level, which had projects in 18 categories. With his regional trophy in hand, Luo now advances to the Louisiana State Science Fair scheduled for the end of March. In addition, the top school at the fair with the highest cumulative scores from students entered was Glasgow Middle School.
The runner-up for Overall Best Project was Megan Skinner of Woodlawn Middle School for her project, “Let There Be Light? The Inefficiencies of Solar Cells.” LSU Continuing Education hosts and organizes the fair. This year’s event was funded entirely through private donations. The Region VII Science and Engineering Fair consists of students from middle and high schools (separately) in seven parishes: East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, Iberville, Pointe Coupee, East Feliciana and West Feliciana.
