Glen Oaks High Students Collect Toys for Tots - December 21, 2010

Members of the Glen Oaks High School Gear Up Explorers Club spent most of December collecting Toys for Tots with an assist from the school’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps battalion.  Advisor Sarah Harris said the purpose of the new school effort was to engage freshmen in service to their school and community using ninth graders as school leaders in reaching out to meet the greatest needs in the local community.

Students collected about 50 new toys for local children this Christmas as part of the GEAR UP federal grant, which follows the class of 2014 for the next four years.  “I am extremely proud of our students for stepping up and leading the way to meet the needs of others when many are themselves in need this holiday season,” Harris said.

Participating freshmen pictured with some of the toys they collected are (left to right, back row) Tyrone Jackson, Arnesia Cador, Lajerrica Ellis, Stacy Peters, (front row) Lillie Franklin and Bryan Swanier.
