Exploding Soda Just One Trick Used to Get Kids Excited About Science at Glen Oaks Park Elementary School - October 22, 2009
Kindergarteners at Glen Oaks Park Elementary School were screaming with glee (photo) recently after being surprised by an exploding bottle of Diet Coke.  The experiment on chemical reactions, in this case Mentos candy mixed with carbonated soda to cause a violent eruption, is just one way teachers are getting students excited about science.  This experiment followed a milder explosion or fizzle between baking soda and vinegar, and the Mentos-and-soda experiment can be tied to the “Big Idea in Science” of systems.  It shows how compounds act alone and what happens or how things are altered when the same items are mixed.  Every week, young students at the school will be involved in Lab Day with experiments like this on the science rotation days.  They are sure to have a blast!
