Teachers and staff at Greenbrier Elementary recently introduced parents to reading strategies to help students read at home. It was a part of activities during Greenbrier’s literacy night event, “Celebrate the Gift of Reading”.
The event was part of the school’s effort to get students excited about reading. Parents learned about many of the programs in place to help students read more effectively and motivate them to increase the number of books they read. One example is the Accelerated Reader program which is used to improve student reading scores.
A group of community members read stories to the students. They included: Dr. Sandra Horton, Director of Monitoring for No Child Left Behind; Mrs. Bonnie Alford, LSU Director of Freshman Orientation; Ms. Patricia Bell, River Oaks Elementary; Mrs. Lisa Lee, Branch Manager at Capital One Bank and Sharmayne Rutledge, Principal of Greenbrier.
In the weeks leading up to literary night, Greenbrier students held a book drive where 503 new and slightly used books were collected and donated to the Big Buddy Program.
