Monday, October 31, was a Halloween to be remembered in many East Baton Rouge Parish School System schools as teachers and children turned out costumed as super heroes, witches and cats to celebrate, dance and raise money for programs.
At Buchanan Elementary School, for example, students on Friday, October 28, partnered with Louisiana State University (LSU) and made donations to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has served as the Original Kids Helping Kids campaign. For generations of Americans, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has been a powerful way to make a difference in the lives of the world’s children. As a reward, students were allowed to dress in costume and dance at a Monster Mash program. First graders Makaylee Rankins and Michael Lewis (first photo, left to right) dressed up as Wonder Woman and a vampire.

Westdale Middle School staff surprised students by greeting them October 31 dressed in Halloween costumes. Faculty and staff will be in costume all during the school day. It is part of the Positive Behavior Intervention Strategy activity that shows a “different” and “lighter” side of teachers to students. Spanish teachers Laura Fernandez and Lilly Salazer (second photo, left to right) got a little “mad” with hats during the celebration.

Eighth-grade ELA teachers at Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School mixed up a "brew of good reading" on Halloween. They included (third photo, left to right) LSU intern Ashley Shinpoch, teacher Alesha Cavanaugh, LSU intern Wesly Guzzetta, teacher Debra Hale, intern Morgan Rainey and teacher Monica Kimbrough.

At University Terrace Elementary School, two nerds took over the hallway. They were fifth-grade teachers Green (fourth photo, left) and Larroquette (right) in costume. While at Capitol Elementary School, the kindergarten and para teaching team (fifth photo) took over as characters from “The Flintstones” cartoon show.
