Health Care Centers in Schools Celebrates Groundbreaking on New Health Center

On Friday, March 13, 2009, Health Care Centers in Schools, Inc. and East Baton Rouge Parish School System celebrated the groundbreaking of a new student health center at Broadmoor High School at 10100 Goodwood Blvd. in Baton Rouge. The new health center will open for students in the fall of 2009.
Amedisys is the corporate partner for the Broadmoor High Health Center. Pledging $150,000, Amedisys is the first of sixteen potential corporate community investment partners in the expansion of Health Care Centers in Schools. A new health center is also under construction at Glasgow Middle School and will open in the fall of 2009.
Health Care Centers in Schools, Inc. is a non-profit organization that contracts with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System to operate the school nurse program at EBR public schools. In addition, HCCS operates nine school-based health care centers at EBR and Recovery District public schools under contract with the State Office of Public Health. The expansion initiative is being undertaken in partnership with the EBR School Board, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, and corporate community partners. In keeping with Governor Jindal's goal of providing affordable, effective primary medical services to Louisiana's children, HCCS offers services based on the belief that children who are physically and mentally healthy will have a greater chance to improve academic achievement.
The Healthy Student Partnership model of delivering primary care medical services becomes financially self-sustaining within two years of each center opening. The service delivery system is unique to Baton Rouge, yet presents a model capable of being replicated throughout Louisiana.
• HCCS currently administers limited health services to 44,000 children on 90 school campuses in East Baton Rouge parish public schools.
• HCCS employs over 90 people, including physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed clinical social workers, and support staff.
• The mission of HCCS is that all children have access to high quality, school-based preventive health care in East Baton Rouge Parish |
