Thirteen became a lucky number for David Holmes, a 12th grader at Baton Rouge Magnet High School today, February 14, as the Louisiana Department of Education reported he now is eligible for the 2011 Louisiana State Students of the Year competition for high schoolers. Out of 13 total candidates, including him, Holmes was selected as Region 2 High School Student of the Year winner, according to state Program Consultant Linda Champion.
In January, Holmes was recognized as the East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s 2011 Student of the Year at the high school level. At the district, regional, state and national levels, there are three Students of the Year awards – one each at the elementary, middle and high school levels.
“We are very proud of David, and all he has accomplished,” said Nanette McCann, principal of Baton Rouge Magnet High School. “He will represent his school and the district well at the state level, and I have every confidence in his ability to perform at a high level here, as well.”
Holmes attended several East Baton Rouge Parish School System schools, including the Baton Rouge Center for Visual & Performing Arts, Glasgow Middle School and now Baton Rouge Magnet High School. His hobbies include playing basketball, playing the viola and collecting books and coins. His parents are Carolyn and Herman Holmes, who also attended Baton Rouge High.
“David serves as the Student Government president and does so as my right hand,” McCann said. “Through his leadership as a student, he is motivated and driven to make a difference in the lives of others. I am very proud that he will represent East Baton Rouge Parish and Baton Rouge Magnet High School as the 2011 Student of the Year.”
The state winners at the three levels will be announced at an event held for regional winners at 8 a.m. March 3 at the Claiborne Building. A reception will follow the ceremony at 6 p.m. in the Louisiana State Museum on North Street across from the State Capitol.
