Twenty-two Scotlandville Magnet High School juniors received an in-depth lesson in resume building and techniques for a successful job interview.  It was part of a business conference held by Junior Achievement of Greater Baton Rouge called Connecting to Success. 

This is the second year Junior Achievement has presented the business conference to students in area schools.  Paula Bradley, education manager for Junior Achievement, says the primary goal of the conference is to teach students skills to properly present themselves as they participate in interviews for scholarships, jobs or college.  Bradley says the students take part in resume writing workshops, team activities and ethics training.  “The most important thing is that the students learn to present themselves in a positive manner,” Bradley said.

Danielle Scott of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development Federal Credit Union (LA DOTD FCU) led the students through exercises which demonstrated proper and improper workplace behaviors.  The students discussed examples of company policies and were quizzed on ethical behavior.

Lacey Brown, a junior, says she did not have much knowledge about resumes or job interviews before the conference.  She says she learned valuable interviewing skills. “Knowing how to talk and speak to people and not being timid when you talk is important,” she said.  Brown said the message on ethics was the most important topic of the conference.
