All of LaSalle Elementary School’s faculty and staff celebrated International Literacy Day on September 8. The day began with an explanation of the importance of literacy in our world and how privileged American students are to have access to a free education, where they can learn to read and write. A video, created by the students and faculty of Ocoee Middle School in Orange County, Fla., was shown to the entire student body. The video was set to the tune of The Black Eyed Peas I’ve Gotta a Feelin’,” and lyrics were changed to reflect an excitement for reading. By the end of the video, many LaSalle students were singing the chorus. They also will watch the video again during music classes next week. Afterwards, all faculty, staff and students enthusiastically opened their favorite book and enjoyed a few minutes of sustained silent reading. Before leaving the auditorium, the students joined together in chanting LaSalle’s reading motto, “The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the further you go.”
