Six Teachers Receive Liberty Mutual Scholarships to Pursue National Board Certification - September 14, 2011

Six East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) teachers have been awarded full scholarships to participate in the National Board Certification process.  Liberty Mutual, partnering with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, offers a limited number of Learn Return National Board Certification Scholarships to teachers nationwide annually.

EBRPSS full scholarship Learn Return winners for 2011 are teachers:  Kiesha Arceneaux of Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School, Adele Davis of Woodlawn Elementary School, Jessica Edwards of Scotlandville Magnet High School, Passion Mason of Jefferson Terrace Elementary School, Allison Miller of EBR Laboratory Academy and Mackenzie Price of Villa del Rey Elementary School.  In total, 30 teachers were given scholarships nationwide this year.

National Board Certification is achieved upon successful completion of a voluntary assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do. National Board Certification is available nationwide for most pre-K–12 teachers.

As part of the certification process, candidates complete 10 assessments that are reviewed by trained teachers in their certificate areas. The assessments include four portfolio entries that feature teaching practice and six constructed response exercises that assess content knowledge.

National Board Certification (NBC) is an advanced teaching credential. It complements, but does not replace, a state's teacher license. It is valid for 10 years, and renewal candidates must begin the renewal process during their eighth or ninth years as NBC teachers.
