LSU Students Clean, Paint Schools During Community Bound Project - August 29, 2011

On Saturday, August 20, Louisiana State University (LSU) students and ARAMARK volunteers were pulling weeds, painting walls, cleaning hallways and planting bushes as part of the university’s ongoing Community Bound service project.  Six area schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) received the assistance from primarily first-year LSU students.  About 500 students, faculty, staff and other volunteers generally participate in the projects.

LSU Chancellor Michael Martin, Westdale Heights Academic Magnet (WHAM) School Principal Norma Church and EBRPSS Superintendent John Dilworth (first photo, left to right) were on site at WHAM to lend a hand.  Also present were LSU students (second photo, left to right) Aleidra Allen, Derick Williams, Erin Kenna and Tommy Lebeau, who worked on the campus’ landscaping project.

After a welcome by Martin and Dilworth at the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student Athletes at LSU, students were transported that Saturday morning to Baton Rouge Magnet High (currently located temporarily at the former Robert E. Lee High School); WHAM; Glasgow Middle; the Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion (FLAIM, formerly South Boulevard), Westminster Elementary and Jefferson Terrace Elementary schools.

Community Bound seeks to construct positive relationships amongst students, faculty and staff, as well as Baton Rouge community members. It also aims to get students thinking critically about community issues and ways to address them. The program is sponsored by Volunteer LSU, Campus Life, Career Services, African American Cultural Center, Honors College, Campus Federal Credit Union, First Year Experience and ARAMARK Facility Services.
