Cutting-Edge Security Comes to McKinley Middle Academic Magnet - May 29, 2008

The School System completed the installation of a first-of-its-kind security system at McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School.  The school was chosen for the installation because it is a new school and easier to outfit with the technology.

East Baton Rouge Parish School System is the first in the nation to create a Virtual Emergency Response Network in which emergency services personnel can, within seconds, view and tactically assess a developing emergency in the school.  This is done with mobile data computers and video surveillance monitors.  The new, state-of-the art security system allows McKinley Middle to network directly with local law enforcement agencies, as well as first responders, during a crisis.

In the event of an emergency, teachers can contact law enforcement agencies by pressing a wireless key fob.  When the emergency alarm is activated, officers can view a map of the school and any developing situation from a remote location.

Integrated video surveillance cameras give officials an early view of a suspect so law enforcement officers have a description before arriving at the school.  In addition, motion detectors strategically placed throughout the school can track the suspect anywhere in the school.

McKinley Middle also has been outfitted with “safe rooms” throughout the school.  These rooms are equipped with bullet-resistant locks and a signaling station so teachers can speak directly to law enforcement officers in real time.

On May 29, one of the largest and most realistic “active shooter” demonstrations and training sessions was held at the school using this technology.  The Baton Rouge Police Department, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Department and the Louisiana State Police took part in this training exercise.  In addition, the Baton Rouge Fire Department and the East Baton Rouge Parish EMS participated as first responders.
