Science teachers from across the school district gathered Thursday afternoon, April 22, for the Second Annual Showcase of Inquiry Learning. Sponsored by the school district’s Office of Professional Development and the Mickelson ExxonMobil Academy, along with the National Science Teachers Association, the event allowed experienced science teachers to share hands-on projects other science teachers can introduce to students with an emphasis on math and science. It included about 12 exhibits by past teacher participants in the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. Among the exhibits were: Measurement, To Move or Not to Move, Exploring Perimeter and Area, Origami Boxes, Whackers, OP Art: Integrating Math and Art, Bubbles in Science and Math and more.
Mary Johnson (pictured, second from left), an Audubon Elementary teacher, oversaw an exhibit on Newton’s Laws. When explaining Newton’s Second Law (Force = Mass X Acceleration), she used a hands-on experiment racing balloons between Leah Station (left), daughter of Claiborne Upper Elementary School teacher Lontarris Williams (center), and LaSalle Elementary School student Serena Boatner (right).
