Teachers' Imaginations Take Off During Academy Rocket Launch
- July 10, 2008

More than 200 teachers from the region had a blast today, July 9, launching toy rockets during the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in Baton Rouge. In the Atrium of the Sheraton Baton Rouge Convention Center Hotel, teams of teachers worked on various hands-on, problem-solving projects that incorporated math and science. By launching an air rocket with varied air pressure, mass vs. force, teachers like Stephanie Reddoch (first photo, far left) of Sharon Hills Elementary School, had a little fun while learning new teaching methodologies. She was joined in the effort by teachers from other districts and Justin DeWall (far right), a presenter with The National Science Teachers Association.
Other hands-on projects during the week-long Academy included making miniature rockets using 35mm film canisters and various amounts of Alka-Seltzer and water, as demonstrated by Sharon Hills librarian Evelyn Auster (second photo, left) and Wedgewood Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Rachel Boudreaux. Throughout the South this week, some 600 teachers participated in Academies in Texas, Louisiana and New Jersey. At the local event, 87 teachers from East Baton Rouge Parish School System participated in the professional development program.

The goal of the program, which was started in 2005 by pro golfer Phil Mickelson and his wife with the help of the National Science Teachers Association, ExxonMobil and Math Solutions, is to help teachers create hands-on lessons that get students excited about math and science.
