Eight high school students from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System will be headed to Philadelphia March 19-21 to compete in the National Marshall-Brennan High School Moot Court Competition.  The announcement was made after the Second Annual High School Moot Court Regional Competition was held February 19 as part of the Southern University Law Center’s (SULC) Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project.

Twenty-six students from Belaire, Glen Oaks, Istrouma and Scotlandville Magnet high schools participated in the regional event, which continued with a first round February 20 at the First Circuit Court of Appeal.

Eight students from the regional competition will go to nationals in March.  They are:  Christian Jones, Glen Oaks High School; Shanderick Williams, Glen Oaks High School; Jonathan Williams, Glen Oaks High School; Tierra Harrison, Scotlandville High School; Camera Whicker, Scotlandville High School; Ellisha Bailey, Istrouma High School; Jasmine Winters, Belaire High School; and Paris Gurley, Belaire High School.

The overall regional winner was Tierra Harrison from Scotlandville High School. Camera Whicker from Scotlandville High School received the second place award, Jasmine Winters from Belaire High School received the third place award and Christian Jones from Glen Oaks High School received the fourth place award. The Glen Oaks High School students earned the trophy for best school participation/cumulative performance and will be awarded the SULC Regional High School Moot Court trophy at the upcoming Louis A. Martinet Foundation Gala.

The Southern University law center hosts the regional moot court competition each year.  The event's  partners are Aramark, Curtis Soderberg, Louis A. Martinet Legal Society, Louisiana Bar Foundation and Judge John M. Guidry.
