Two Baton Rouge Magnet High School teachers were selected from a nationwide applicant pool to attend summer study opportunities supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Najoua Handal attended a five-week institute at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, entitled "Writing Africa: Comparative African and European Palavers and Perspectives. Handal teaches French and Arabic language courses at BRMHS.
Journalism and Speech teacher Fred Aldrich participated in a four-week institute studying "The Cultural Diversity of the American South" at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The Endowment is a federal agency that supports seminars and institutes enabling teachers to study with experts in the humanities disciplines. The 600 teachers who took part in these studies will teach an estimated fifty thousand American elementary, middle, and high school students this school year.
Teachers receive stipends for the program to cover travel, books, and living expenses.
