Awards Program Touts ‘Positive’ News - November 21, 2008

There are positive things going on in East Baton Rouge schools, and proof of that was obvious at the October 29 fall Technical Assistance Seminar.  The event was held for the School System’s school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Support Program (PBIS).  At the ceremony, the School System recognized the winners of the PBIS School of the Year and Coach of the Year awards for 2007-2008.  The winners were McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School and Lynn Williamson, respectively.  Williamson is the Physical Education Teacher at McKinley Middle Academic Academy.

The School System’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Program is designed to reinforce appropriate student behaviors school wide.  The district began implementing the program in 36 schools during the fall of 2007.  By the following fall, 19 additional schools had entered the program.  Today, there are 51 active PBIS schools throughout the System.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support has been mandated by the state of Louisiana for all schools since 2003 as a result of Juvenile Justice Reform Act 1225.
