Pre-K students at Polk Elementary School were all smiles Wednesday, May 5, as they each received a stuffed toy bear to take home and were read books about teddy bears. The efforts were part of The Teddy Bear Project, a cooperative venture between members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, the Baton Rouge Association of Minority Firefighters and Wal-Mart on College Drive. Members of the local AKA chapters Gamma Eta Omega (graduate) and Beta Psi (undergraduate from Southern University) were involved in the project. The pre-K children (pictured -- Front Row: Jeremy Short and Justin Moss; Second Row: Kendall Tennart, Niya Lovelace, John Veal, Jamirah Carey, Jordan Rogers and Ashkan Bell; and Back Row: Jasmyne Richard, Renatiya Hall, Caleb Hamilton, Deontay Winfield, Furniyah Smith and Makayla Myles) actively participated in the storytelling by counting, pointing and describing the bears. Refreshments (Teddy Grams cookies, of course) were provided, as well.
