CONGRATULATIONS to our state's two new winners of the Presidential Award for Math and Science Teaching. Both Deborah Morrison of Baton Rouge and Wendy DeMers of New Orleans are National Board Certified Teachers and will be honored with a trip to Washington, D.C. as well as a monetary award. Deborah and Wendy are both energetic, dynamic professionals who put the interests of their students first. Congratulations to both of them for representing Louisiana so well!

East Baton Rouge Parish School Teacher wins Presidential Award

Deborah Morrison of Westminster Elementary is the winner of the 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Ms. Morrison is a National Board Certified teacher and will be recognized by the President of the United States at ceremony in Washington, D.C. the week of April 11-16, 2005.

In 2004, Ms. Morrison was nominated by her peers and then selected by a national committee as a state finalist. The National Science Foundation makes recommendations from the list of state finalist and then forwards those recommendations to the White House. Winners receive a citation signed by the President of the United States and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is the nation's highest honor for teachers of mathematics and science. The Awards recognize exemplary K-12 teachers for their contributions in the classroom and to their profession. Excellent teachers perform miracles everyday with little or no recognition. The Presidential Awards demonstrate the value and appreciation the nation has for the teaching profession.
