Students, Staff Flock to Open Accounts on First Day of School Credit Union - February 6, 2009

On the first day in operation, the new Hornet’s Nest Credit Union at Scotlandville Magnet High School was a success.  Student volunteers and employees performed 62 transactions on Wednesday, February 4 – 50 of them to open new accounts by the school’s students, staff and alumni.

This is the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development’s Federal Credit Union (LA DOTD FCU) school site, where student workers like (first photo, left to right) Kayla Heard, senior branch manager, and Latressia Sawyer, in-school branch leader, helped another student, Kristin Kendricks, set up a new account.

Principal Howard Davis was present to lend a hand, but employees like LA DOTD FCU Vice President of Credit Union Literacy Danielle Scott (second photo, left) had it under control with the help of student workers like Branch Manager Destinie LeDuff.
The actual credit union is located upstairs in Building F, where the school business incubator program also is located. It will be open 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and offer members savings and checking accounts, check-cashing services, debit cards, deposit services and limited cash withdrawals. The Hornet’s Nest is staffed by students in the Education for Careers class at Scotlandville Magnet High School. They are LA DOTD credit union employees.

In addition, two Scotlandville senior students participating in Louisiana’s Cooperative Education program hold paid positions at Hornet’s Nest Credit Union as part-time employees at LA DOTD FCU.

For more information, contact Principal Davis at (225) 775-3715 or Scott at (225) 243-0511.
