One Hue, Every Side … in Less Than a Minute at Scotlandville Middle! - November 11, 2010

Many of the adults, some of whom were engineers themselves, fumbled with Rubik’s Cubes in solving challenging math problems Thursday morning, November 11.  In the meantime, the fingers flew around the cubes when students decked out in yellow Scotlandville Pre-Engineering Academy (middle school) shirts took over – solving most problems in less than 1 minute.

The school’s Rubik’s Cube Club held a strategy class to demonstrate how the “toy” is used in learning for administrators, community leaders and mentors.  Among the adults struggling with the cubes were:  East Baton Rouge Parish School System Superintendent John Dilworth, School Board members Darryl Robertson and Tarvald Smith, State Rep. Dalton Honore’ and representatives of the Big Buddy Program, engineering programs at Louisiana State University and Southern University, ExxonMobil and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Nakevia Anthony (pictured, right) was left scratching her head over one problem during a quick-draw demonstration by a student while bemused fellow Big Buddy rep Tameika LeDay (left) looked on.

In Math class, students often use the Rubik’s Cube strategy in working geometry equations, fractions and other math problems.  Guests are not expected to solve the cube and equations in the hour-long demonstration, but they will be given their own Rubik’s Cube and solution guide to practice at home.

For more information, contact Kathie T. Johnson, Magnet lead teacher at the school, (225) 775-0776.
