Elizabeth “Lizzie” Wicker (pictured with her award-winning entry), an eighth-grade honor roll student at Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School, won first place in the National Black and White Photography Competition held June 16-21 in Nashville. The competition was part of the National Junior Beta Club Convention. The photo, which depicts the interior of a 1950s Chevy truck framed by the broken rear window, placed second in the State Junior Beta Club Competition held earlier this year.
After receiving a camera as a Christmas present two years ago, Wicker began taking more and more photos of people and places – especially those of environments that convey a message. When not busy with her camera, she is a competitive figure skater (five years with a coach) as a member of the U.S. Figure Skating Association and the Figure Skating Club of New Orleans. She also does volunteer work, including that at a local daycare and as an instructor for beginning skaters. Wicker also is an avid equestrian (Western Pleasure), swims and plays the piano.
The daughter of Laura and Buddy Wicker, Wicker will be entering the eighth grade next year.
