East Baton Rouge School System Offers Summer Enrichment Programs for Second- and Third-Grade Students - May 25, 2011

Community Members Help Fund Summer Program

Sometimes a child is on the bubble – not doing well enough to pass a grade and be promoted.  With a little help, like that coming from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s Summer Opportunity for Academic Remediation (SOAR) Program, they can be better prepared academically for the incoming school year and be promoted to the next grade level.
This summer, the school district once again will offer students currently in the second or third grade (rising third and fourth graders) an opportunity for extra enrichment though the SOAR Program. It runs June 1-27 and is designed to help students who may not have met promotion standards.  The students are identified by their principals as those who are close to meeting promotions standards but need additional, targeted assistance in the areas of Math and Reading.

This program is fee based at a cost of $200 with limited scholarships available.
During the pilot last summer, community members contacted the School System with offers to underwrite scholarships for students to attend the SOAR Program.

This year, the district is working with the Academic Distinction Fund (ADF) to help provide limited scholarships for students who may otherwise not be able to attend because of financial constraints.
