Congratulations EBR Students of the Year!
68 East Baton Rouge Parish School System students were in the pool of candidates for the district’s 2006-2007 Student of the Year award.
Elementary, middle and high schools submitted their top students, as chosen by their selection committees. The Student of Year nomination process began in October, 2006.
Nominated students must submit a portfolio for judging by the EBRPSS selection committee. The finalists are selected based on the portfolios, LEAP and other test scores, leadership qualities, citizenship and service.
Then next step is a round of interviews and a writing sample. Each student selected from kindergarten to 12th grade must write on the same topic. This year students wrote about the teaching profession and the need for more people to pursue teaching. Students suggested ways to make teaching a more attractive choice for professionals.
Earlier this month all of the nominated students were honored during a reception hosted by the school district and sponsored by school system partner, Neighbors Federal Credit Union. The finalists were announced and were honored at the February 15th school board meeting.
Timothy Gregoire, a student at Forest Heights Academy, was chosen as Student of the Year for elementary students.
Joanne Chien, a student at Glasgow Middle School, was chosen as Student of the Year for Middle Schools.
Alexander Leder, a student at McKinley High School was chosen as Student of the Year for high schools.
