East Baton Rouge Parish School System Monitoring Swine Flu Outbreak - April 27, 2009

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System has been closely monitoring the nationwide public health concern regarding swine influenza cases reported in states other than Louisiana.

The School System has taken proactive measures by reminding principals and teachers of the importance of preventative measures to thwart the possible spread of any virus. Teachers and principals have been asked to remind students to cover their noses and mouths when coughing or sneezing, washing their hands frequently with antibacterial soap, and stay home if they become sick.

At this time there are no reported confirmed cases of swine flu in Louisiana. However, should the situation change the School System is ready to respond by following all recommendations provided by the state and national health agencies. Additionally, pre-identified district administrators are currently in place to respond to any directive if necessary.

The district will send a letter and fact sheet home with all students tomorrow highlighting the important steps that should be taken in preventing the spread of viruses.
