Students wearing leis, saris, armor and other costumes all were part of Tara High School’s Annual GeoJourney Expo for its STAR (Striving To Achieve Results) Academy on Wednesday, April 4. Ninth graders enrolled in the program took a “trip around the world” while staying at the school during this culmination of a semester-long project that crosses curriculums.
During the event, students were judged on displays they create about a country and culture. Students dressed in costumes and prepared food reflecting the culture. For example, Victoria Williams (pictured) was decked out in a multi-colored outfit and hat typically worn in her researched country, Tanzania. Each project consisted of a research paper, PowerPoint presentation, display board and items representing the country.
Out of 50 schools receiving grants in the state, Tara High is the only one in the parish to receive the High School Redesign Grant to start this ninth-grade initiative. It was awarded a few years ago. This year’s juniors are the Tara High program’s first class in preparing students to enter the 10th grade.
