Baton Rouge, La. – The East Baton Rouge Parish School System is currently looking for qualified tutors who can help students prepare for the high-stakes LEAP test which will be given to all 4th and 8th grade students in March, 2007. All East Baton Rouge Parish School System students in the 4th and 8th grades students must pass this test in order to be promoted to the next grade. Qualified tutors will help those students at risk of failing the LEAP test in the areas of Mathematics and English/Language Arts.

The school system offers 50 hours of free tutoring to students who are at risk of failing the tests in Math and English/Language Arts. To ensure that these students can take advantage of this service, participating schools will schedule these tutoring sessions throughout the day including before, during and after school hours. In addition, some schools are offering Saturday classes.

State Funds for LEAP tutoring were cut this year. However, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board approved funding from the general fund for this year’s tutoring program to continue.

Tutors who are certified teachers will receive $20.00 per hour. Non-certified teachers, who are currently employed as teachers (i.e. temporary, provisional), will also receive $20.00 per hour as long as they are supervised by a Highly Qualified Teacher. University students are also encouraged to participate. They must be currently enrolled at a college or university and have completed two years (48 hours) of course-work in the subject they will tutor. These students will receive $12.00 per hour.

All selected tutors will be screened and must go through the hiring process which is administered by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System Human Resources Department before being placed in any school.
